What is a period? – Overview of Menstruation
Menstruation is also commonly known as Periods. In this natural biological process, generally once in a month, tissue and blood from our uterus come out from our vagina. The beginning of menstruation is the process of the body’s way of preparation of the body for a probable pregnancy. The release of the hormones, progesterone, and oestrogen is carried out by the ovaries. The building up of the endometrium or the uterine lining which nurtures the fertilized egg is signaled by these female hormones.
During ovulation, an egg is released from one of the ovaries which travels through the fallopian tube and attaches to the uterine lining being ready for fertilization, which is also signaled by the same hormones. To fertilize the egg, a sperm cell is needed. The uterine line is broken down and shed in case the sperm cell is absent through the process of the period.
This process of building up the lining, breaking down, and ultimately getting shed takes between 21 to 35 days for most women, and on average, it takes around 28 days.
