In the last article: Overview of MRI and Risks Involved, we have already gone through an overview of MRI and the risks involved in it, in this article we are going to discuss the various uses of MRI tests.
What are the uses of MRI Tests?
Using a powerful magnet and radio waves, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a highly advanced diagnostic imaging procedure that generates highly detailed images of the inner structure of the body without the use of radiation.
Our doctors can examine our organs, tissue, and skeletal system with the use of this non-invasive diagnostic testing which generates high-resolution images of the inside of the body, and with help of that variety of problems may be diagnosed. Given below are the various uses of MRI Tests on different parts of our body :
MRI of the brain and spinal cord – Uses of MRI Tests
The most frequently used imaging test for the brain and spinal cord is MRI which is often performed for diagnosing :
•Stroke
•Spinal cord disorders
•Brain injury from trauma
•Disorders of the eye and inner ear
•Aneurysms of cerebral vessels
•Multiple sclerosis
•Tumors
There is also a special type of MRI known as the functional MRI of the brain (fMRI) which generates images of blood flow to the brain’s certain area. An fMRI is used for examining the anatomy of the brain and to determine which critical functions are being by which brain’s part.
In the brains of people being considered for brain surgery, this helps identify important language and movement control areas. Disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, or damage from a head injury can also be assessed by using Functional MRI.
MRI of the heart and blood vessels – Uses of MRI Tests
Doctors can assess the following by using MRI that focuses on the heart or blood vessels:
• Heart’ walls’ thickness and movement
• Aorta’s Structural problems, like aneurysms or dissections
• Blockages or Inflammation in the blood vessels
• Size and function of the chambers of the heart
• Extent of damage caused by heart attacks or heart disease
MRI of other internal organs – Uses of MRI Tests
Tumors or other abnormalities of many organs (including the below-given organs) in the body can be checked through MRI:
•Pancreas
•Ovaries
•Spleen
•Liver and bile ducts
•Prostate
•Uterus
•Kidneys
MRI of bones and joints – Uses of MRI Tests
The following can be evaluated by using MRI :
• Infections of the Bone
• Tumors of the bones and soft tissues
• Joint abnormalities caused by traumatic or repetitive injuries, such as torn cartilage or ligaments
• Disk abnormalities in the spine
MRI of the breasts – Uses of MRI Tests
Particularly in women with dense breast tissue or who might be at high risk of the disease, MRI can be used with mammography to detect breast cancer.
