An X-ray is a type of non-invasive diagnostic test, which is quick and painless. It produces images of the structures of our body – bones in particular. Click here to know more about X-rays.
What is an OPG X-ray? – Orthopantomogram overview
At some point or another on our dental treatment, our dentist may most certainly ask us to get an OPG X-ray. What exactly is an OPG X-ray?
A panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the lower and upper jaw is known as an Orthopantomagram or OPG. It is also referred to as Orthopantomagraph or by the proprietary name Panorex. In an OPG X-ray, we get a flattened two-dimensional view of a semi-circle from ear to ear. To make up the composite panoramic image, where the lower jaw or mandible and upper jaw or maxilla can be in the viewed area, panoramic X-rays allow images of multiple angles to be taken. The structures which are outside the viewed area are blurred.
Difference between close-up X-rays of individual teeth and OPG X-ray – Orthopantomogram overview
OPG X-ray differs from the small close-up X-rays of individual teeth that dentists take. An OPG shows the number, position, and growth of all the teeth, even those that have not yet been through the gum, or in simpler terms we can also view the teeth which can not be seen on the surface. It is less fine detailed but covers a much broader area to be viewed.
Hard to see areas like our wisdom teeth, or the child’s jaw and teeth development, assessing the development generally, also orthodontic need – in all of these cases, OPG can be particularly useful. Especially if we grind our teeth, it is often used to check our jaw point (the TMJ or temporomandibular joint) or as it is sometimes called the CMA or craniomandibular articulation.
What are the advantages of OPG X-ray / Panoramic Images – Orthopantomogram overview
• Patient Radiation Dose is low
• Covers wide area – facial bones and teeth including the temporomandibular joint / TMJ
• Patients who are restricted in opening their mouth can also get an OPG
• Doesn’t take much time for producing the OPG Image
• Helps in educating patient and case presentation through visual aid
• The examinations convenient for the patients
Before an OPG X-ray – Orthopantomogram overview
Like in any X-ray, we will be asked to remove any jewelry or metallic items to avoid interference with the image, as it blocks the X-ray beam. The OPG X-ray hardly takes a minute in taking the image.
