In this article, let’s discuss what happens during a mammogram, a bit about digital mammography, and is mammography safe or not.
What happens during a mammogram? – Is Mammography Safe | What happens during mammography | Digital mammography
In Deep Medical Centre, as in other diagnostic centres, the mammography is a lady technician or the lady nurse, would undress us from the waist up and all the ornaments, like necklaces and other metals, would be taken off, and we will be provided to wear a smock or gown that is tied in the front side. We will then stand and the technician would guide us in the position to be held while the mammography machine takes the scan images.
A compressor pushes the breast down to flatten the tissue, once our breast is on the flat X-ray plate. Each breast is well fit onto the X-ray plate. We may have to hold our breath while the pictures are taken, and may feel a bit of pressure and discomfort for usually a very brief time period.
At the very same time, our images might be reviewed and other additional images that view different angles may be taken, if the doctor feels something is unclear or requires further attention. This happens so often that it’s almost considered a routine.
Digital mammograms – Is Mammography Safe | What happens during mammography | Digital mammography
When we are younger than 50 years old, we typically have denser breasts as compared to women who are more than 50 years old. In this scenario, Digital Mammography is used if they are available.
Digital mammograms are nothing but X-ray images transformed into e-images of the breast that is saved onto a computer.
It enables the radiologists doctors to view images that may not have been very evident on a regular mammogram. These images can at once be sent to our radiologists so that they don’t have to wait for the X-ray films.
Is mammography safe? – Is Mammography Safe | What happens during mammography | Digital mammography
Yes, mammography is a safe diagnostic process.
Of course, as with other types of X-rays, we are exposed to a very small amount of radiation during our mammography, yet, the risk of exposure to radiation during the mammography is extremely low. If there is a dire need for a mammogram in pregnancy, we are to wear a lead apron during the mammography.
The images taken during mammography aids our radiologists doctors to spot calcification, or calcium deposits, any cancerous or non-cancerous lumps, and cysts – which may normally come and go during some female’s menstrual cycles, in our breasts.
The national diagnostic system for reading mammograms is known as the Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System or BI-RADS.
In BI-RADS, seven categories have been made from zero to six, where each category is to ascertain whether an area is more likely to have a cancerous lump or benign (noncancerous) lump and each category has its follow-up plan.
