Low Back Pain During Menstruation
Some women suffer low back pain too, in addition to abdominal pain, headaches, and bloating that most women suffer during the period of menstruation. This low back pain, generally experienced along the center portion of the low back can be subtle and even debilitating for some. It is a sigh of relief that the back pain which for most women may begin a few days before the menstrual cycle usually subsides for the most part and is usually not serious.
This low back pain during menstruation may begin to create hindrance in our day-to-day activities and that’s why it becomes important to understand the reason behind the back pain during menstruation and different ways to manage the pain.
What is the reason behind low back pain during menstruation?
Thought to be caused by hormone changes, the nature of low back pain during menstruation is typically muscular. Prostaglandins are the hormones which are released during a menstrual cycle for promoting uterine contraction for shedding the uterine lining can affect the muscles of the lower back. Painful menstruation or dysmenorrheal can be caused by an excess of prostaglandins. The pain can radiate from the lower abdomen into the low back due to heavy contractions.
In case we have endometriosis ( a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus), we may also experience low back pain during our menstrual cycle and we may want to talk to our doctor about diagnosis and proper options for the treatment if this is of concern.
What can we do to reduce cramping and low back pain during menstruation :
• As per studies, women who exercise on a regular basis have lesser painful cramps and low back pain during menstruation, that’s why we should try to exercise regularly.
• We should try to take nutritional supplements with Vitamin B and Magnesium and maintain a healthy diet.
• Starting over-the-counter Acetaminophen or anti-inflammatories, like Ibuprofen or naproxen few days before menstruation benefits some women.
• Plenty of water should be drunk to stay hydrated.
• We should try to take warm baths or apply heat.
• Caffeine and chocolates should be avoided.
• Smoking and alcohol intake should be avoided.
• Birth control pills are required by some women to aid with menstrual pain.
Medical attention should be sought for this low back pain may turn out to be more than the typical low back pain caused due to the prostaglandin release during menstrual if the low back pain continues past the menstrual cycle or leg pain or weakness is developed.
