In previous articles, we have learned an overview of MRI and it’s risks and the different uses of MRI. In this article, we shall discuss – What to expect when having MRI Scan? We will discuss how to prepare for an MRI Scan and what can we expect during and after our MRI Scan.
How to prepare for an MRI Scan? – What to expect when having MRI scan?
Unless instructed otherwise, we may continue to take our usual medications and eat normally before an MRI exam. We may be asked to change into a gown and to avoid any accidents or faulty imaging that may occur due to magnetic force of the MRI Machine, we would be asked to remove all those stuff that may be attracted to magnetic force, like :
•Watches
•Wigs
•Underwire bras
•Jewelry
•Cosmetics, containing metal particles
•Hearing aids
•Eyeglasses
•Hairpins
•Dentures
What happens during MRI Scan? – What to expect when having MRI scan?
With both ends open, the MRI machine looks like a long narrow tube where we lie down on a movable table. Under the observation of a technologist who guides us through all the test and with whom we can talk by microphone, the table slides into the opening of the tube.
Though most people get through their MRI Scan without any problem, we may be given drug to help us feel sleepy and less anxious if we inform the technologist of our claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces).
Do we feel any pain during MRI Scan? -What to expect when having MRI scan?
No, we don’t feel any pain during MRI Scan. A strong magnetic field is created around us by the MRI Machine, and the the radio waves are directed at our body, but we don’t feel the magnetic field or radio waves, and there are no part around us that move.
We may be given earplugs or music may be played for us to help block the noise of the internal part of the magnet which produces repetitive thumping, tapping and other noises during our MRI Scan.
To enhance certain details in the MRI Scan Image, a contrast material, typically gadolinium (rarely causing any allergic reactions), may be injected into a vein through an IV (intravenous) line in our arm or hand.
How much time does a MRI Scan take? – What to expect when having MRI scan?
A typical MRI Scan can take between 15 minutes to more than one hour during which our movement can blur the MRI Scan Image, therefore we are to hold still until we are in the MRI Machine.
We might be asked to perform various small tasks like rubbing a block of sandpaper, answering simple questions or tapping our thumb against our fingers to help locate the portions of our brain that may be controlling the actions, during a functional MRI (fMRI).
What happens after an MRI Test? – What to expect when having MRI scan?
We can resume our usual activities immediately after the scan, unless we are sedated.
Results of an MRI Scan – What to expect when having MRI scan?
The report of our test would be prepared by a Radiologist (Doctor who is specialized to interpret MRI Scan and other imaging tests) and the report would then be interpreted by our doctor who had instructed us to get that MRI Test. Our doctor would then discuss the results with us and accordingly guide us for further steps.
