5 key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans
Some of us may be fully aware of what CT scans and Ultrasounds are, but there may also be some of us, who might have just heard of them. Both of these are quite known imaging tools for diagnosing medical conditions, that being said, these two shouldn’t be considered the same, and in this article, we are going to learn about the 5 key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans( CT stands for Computed Tomography). If you want to get a good overview of each of them, you can first go through these articles: CT Scan, and Ultrasound, otherwise, we can just go through the 5 main differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans.
Given below are some of the 5 key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans :
1. Usage – key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans :
First things first, what is the objective and usage of each of them? Well, though it is quite good in its work, ultrasound has its boundaries. Ultrasounds come in handy while diagnosing internal organs and in prenatal care, they are generally avoided for imaging any bone structures. Contrary to this, CT Scans are used for imaging soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels, that too at the same time and with great detail.
By putting together multiple images taken from different angles of the same area, a 3-D picture of the target area is created by CT Scan. The medical team can use a single high-definition image that is created by adjusting and clarifying this ‘layering’ effect which is put through a computer.
2. Time Taken – key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans :
A CT Scan generally takes a shorter time (typically about 5 minutes), whereas, a routine ultrasound typically takes about 15 minutes to be completed.
3. Cost – key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans :
An ultrasound procedure will generally cost us lesser than a CT scan procedure.
4. Risk of radiation – key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans :
Ultrasound devices use high-frequency sound waves to generate images, hence there is no exposure to radiation when using ultrasound, whereas, there is very little radiation exposure ( as much as what we might get from 3 years of background radiation) with respect to CT Scan, that’s the reason, pregnant women and children are prevented from getting CT Scans.
5. Preference – key differences between Ultrasound and CT Scans :
As discussed above, each of them is good at what it is supposed to do and ain’t an alternative to the other. Both come with advantages and usage.
To take an example, CT Scan is a better option to screen certain sorts of cancer tumors, looking for various abnormalities within our body, or to further enhance their accuracy and definition, being used with other imaging techniques like MRI, whereas, ultrasounds are preferred for imaging internal organs, tendons, muscles, etc. An ultrasound comes in very handy in finding lesions or other problems and in the determination of the size of organs and tissues. An ultrasound is generally used in many sorts of medical applications like the removal of gall stones, kidney stones, and prenatal care.
Though this article is about differentiating CT Scans and Ultrasound, we must also know that both of them are preferable to regular x-rays. Especially when diagnosing people with certain types of cancers, having to go with the least number of medical procedures is good, and both of these tests, especially a CT Scan, creates a much better image that can be viewed from different angles and is directed precisely to a target location, the doctors find better views of the target area over a regular flat x-ray.
