In the article: Overview of MRI and Risks Involved, we have already gone through an overview of MRI and the risks involved in it, in this article we are going to discuss how MRI Scan works.
How MRI Scan works?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that generates high-quality images of various body parts by utilizing the hydrogen nucleus, which behaves like a tiny magnet, spinning on its axis with a north-south pole. The technique is based on the magnetic properties of the body, and when the body is placed in a powerful magnetic field, hydrogen protons align in the direction of the magnetic field. The alignment generates a magnetic vector that, combined with radio waves, produces images of different body parts and this is how MRI Scan works.
MRI machines come with varying field strengths, typically ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 tesla. Radio waves added to the magnetic field resonate with the hydrogen nuclei, producing a signal that is used to generate MR images. The use of multiple transmitted radiofrequency pulses in sequence emphasizes particular tissues or abnormalities. MR images comprise a series of pulse sequences, and different relaxation times of various tissues can be identified separately, enabling the detection of diseases.
MRI is a safe diagnostic tool that does not use radiation, unlike X-ray and computed tomography (CT). No known biological hazards are associated with MRI. However, MRI scanners can be dangerous for individuals with pacemakers, metal clips, or metal valves due to potential movement within a magnetic field. Metal joint prostheses are less problematic, but there may be some image distortion close to the metal.
In conclusion, MRI is a powerful and safe medical imaging technique that has revolutionized medical imaging. Its ability to produce detailed images of the body using different pulse sequences and emphasis aids in the detection of diseases and abnormalities without invasive procedures or radiation exposure.
