Mammography Overview
In this article, we are going to discuss a brief mammography overview, its types, preparation & who should go for mammography. Let’s start with a mammography overview. A mammogram or mammography is non-invasive diagnostic imaging. It’s an X-ray of the breast. In the early diagnosis of breast cancer, with monthly breast self-examinations and regular clinical exams, mammography tends to be a key element. To detect breast cancer or other irregularities in the breast, mammography is used as a screening tool.
Thought of getting a mammography test might make us uncomfortable, but regular mammograms are recommended annually after the age of 40. Though breast cancer may not seem to be highlighted as the problem in India, it is the most common type of cancer in Indian Women, accounting for 14% of cancers in Indian women. It is not only limited to a region set but is on rising in both rural and urban India.
According to reports, every four minutes, an Indian woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and as per the 2018 breast cancer statistics report, one lakh, sixty-two thousand, four hundred and sixty-eight (1,62,468) new breast cancer cases were registered and deaths reported were 87,090. The numbers seem to be growing every year. Let’s learn more about mammography, types of mammograms, who should go for it, and how to prepare for a mammogram.
Types of Mammography – Mammography Overview
When mammography is advised by a doctor as a routine test to check for any changes or breast cancer, this type of mammography, is known as a screening mammogram, where we get several X-ray images of our breast taken by a mammography machine.
For breast implants, or if we have cancer symptoms like a lump, we are directed to go for a diagnostic mammogram. Diagnostic mammography, however, needs more X-rays for getting the breasts’ view from many positions and also allows magnification if the radiologists seem necessary. If compared to screening mammograms, these mammograms are more extensive.
Who should get a mammogram? – Mammography Overview
As already discussed, after the age of 40, women are advised by many experts, including the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Trusted Source of the USA and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to have regular annual mammography done. The American Cancer Society recommends that a woman of and above the age of 45 should get a regular screening mammogram done.
In some cases, like a personal or family history of breast abnormalities or breast cancer, we might be recommended to start screening earlier, and more often with or without the use of additional diagnostic tools, by the doctor.
How to prepare for mammography? – Mammography Overview
Certain guidelines are to be followed on the day of our mammography appointment, such as avoiding the application of certain substances, which may show up as the white images on our scan images.
If we are someone who requires regular mammograms, we should try to use the same diagnostic centre and radiologists every time, if possible, which makes it easier to compare the old results with the new ones. If we are unable to visit the same diagnostic facility every time, we must carry our previous mammogram scans to the current diagnostic center.
During pregnancy or the time period of breastfeeding, we must inform our diagnostic centes / radiologists of the same. Generally, no screening mammograms are performed during this time. If still, the doctor feels it to be necessary, he may order other non-invasive diagnostic methods, like an ultrasound.
