In this article, we will go through the types of ECG but before that let’s have a very brief overview of an ECG test.
An electrocardiogram, also known as ECG, is a test in which sensors, attached to our skin, detect the electrical signals which are produced each time by our heart as it beats. A machine records these signals and then these signals are scrutinized by a doctor to find if they’re unusual. Click here to read more about ECG Overview & Uses.
What are the different types of ECG?
There are mainly three types of ECG, given below is a brief introduction to each of the type :
A stress or exercise – Types of ECG
ECG: This type of ECG Test is carried out while we are doing exercise via exercise bike or a treadmill.
A resting ECG — Types of ECG
This type of ECG test is carried out while we comfortably lie down
An ambulatory ECG or Holger ECG – Types of ECG
In this type of ECG heart is monitored at home for 1 or more days via a small portable machine which is worn at our waist and electrodes are connected to it.
Which type of ECG should we have? – Types of ECG
According to the suspected heart problem and our symptoms, the type of ECG will depend. For instance, if our symptoms are triggered by physical activities, then we may be recommended stress or exercise ECG, on the other hand, for random, irregular symptoms that occur in short episodes, an ambulatory or Holger ECG may be recommended.
Our heart rhythm and its electrical activity would be shown graphically on the screen or on printed paper by the ECG recording machine. In the case of an ambulatory ECG, the ECG machine stores the information about our heart electronically. When the test is completed, the information can then be accessed by our doctor.
Results of the ECG Test — Types of ECG
The recordings of the test may need to be looked at by a specialist doctor to assess if there is a problem and some other tests may also be required, to be certain about the presence of the problem or not. That’s why we may not be able to get the results of our ECG immediately.
That being said, if you visit a diagnostic center just for the sake of the test and report, the test report may be presented soon after the test. As for Deep Medical Centre, we are provided the ECG report within 20 minutes after the test. Irrespective of this, we then carry the report to our doctor who then guides us as to how he/she deems it necessary.
