Using magnets, radio waves, and a computer, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) creates images of interior organs and other structures. We are going to discuss types of MRI Scans in this article, if you want to get a better overview of MRI Scans, please go through these articles: MRI Scans Articles. Doctors use this test to identify a wide range of medical disorders. The imagery provided by X-rays and CT scans (computed tomography) should not be mistaken for that of an MRI. An MRI does not expose the patient to low levels of radiation like an X-ray or CT scan does.
Although any part of the body can be imaged using an MRI, the neurological system and soft tissues of the body are its most often targets for examination. If our doctor feels there may be a problem with the liver, kidneys, pancreas, ovaries, breasts, or prostate, he or she may also request an MRI.
Various Types of MRI Scans
There are numerous types of MRI Scans available. The most typical types of MRI Scans consist of:
Functional MRI – Types of MRI Scans
An FMR (Functional MRI scan) scan measures brain activity. The images show if there are any conditions that could indicate or diagnose a stroke. Additionally, a doctor requests an FMR for brain mapping which is crucial for brain surgery, epilepsy diagnosis, or tumor detection.
Cardiac MRI – Types of MRI Scans
The heart can be seen in great detail thanks to a cardiac MRI. In order to identify your issue and create a treatment plan, your doctor will need a cardiac MRI. The heart and the blood arteries that surround it are both inspected. Heart function is ascertained using the data gathered.
MRI of the Breast – Types of MRI Scans
Candidates for an MRI include those who are at high risk for breast cancer. Despite being non-invasive, clinicians may recommend a needle biopsy of the breast guided by an MRI. Breast cancer will be identified by the MRI, which will also provide details on the tumor’s progression and location.
Magnetic Resonance Venography – Types of MRI Scans
Using contrast dye and magnetic resonance venography (MRV), it is possible to obtain more detailed images of the interior organs and other bodily structures. The veins are highlighted by the dye, making them appear translucent and making them visible in clear images. An MRV is comparable to magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Instead of concentrating on veins, it focuses on blood vessels while combining images and an intravenous contrast dye. The doctor will be able to examine the body’s soft tissues and the blood vessels that pass through the heart.
Non-Contrast MRA – Types of MRI Scans
Contrast dye may not be tolerated by all patients. Patients who have renal issues will find this to be especially true. Historically, these patients were not eligible for MRA procedures. However, modern diagnostic techniques now make it possible for all patients to undergo MRAs without the use of dye and with clear and detailed images.
Open, High-Field MRI – Types of MRI Scans
Some people worry about being closed in during an MRI test. Patients with claustrophobia dislike enclosed MRI machines due to their design. Other patients might not feel comfortable in the machine because they are obese or have post-traumatic stress disorder. Open, high-field MRIs are a better option for these patients.
