We have already discussed: Overview of Ultrasound: Uses, Risks, Limitations & Preparation. Today we are going to take a look at what happens before, during, and after the ultrasound procedure.
Before the ultrasound begins – What happens during an ultrasound?
Before our ultrasound begins, may be asked to do certain activities. Given below are what we can expect before the ultrasound procedure :
• No jewelry would be permitted in the area where we are being examined
•We may have to remove some or all clothing and change into a gown
•We will have to lie on a bed/examination table for the ultrasound test procedure
What happens during an ultrasound?
To prevent air pockets (air pockets can block the sound waves that generate the images), a gel is applied to our skin over the area that is being examined. The gel is water-based and can easily be removed from both skin and clothing (if required).
A transducer (small hand-held device) is pressed against the area being examined by a Sonographer (trained technician of ultrasound procedure) and moved as required to generate images. The sound waves which bounce back after being sent into our body by the transducer, are collected by the transducer and turned into images by sending them to a computer.
In cases when ultrasounds are done inside our body, the transducer is attached to a probe which is inserted into a natural opening in our body. Given below are a few examples :
• Transesophageal Echocardiography: After sedation, a transducer is inserted into our esophagus to obtain hear images.
• Transrectal Ultrasound: A special transducer is placed into the rectum to create images of the prostate.
• Transvaginal Ultrasound: To get a quick look at the uterus and ovaries, a special transducer is gently inserted into the vagina.
Generally, an ultrasound takes around 20-60 minutes and causes no pain. That being said, mild discomforts may be experienced as the sonographer guides the transducer over our body, especially when it’s inserted into our body or when we are to have a full bladder.
After the ultrasound: Follow up and report – What happens during an ultrasound?
Immediately after the ultrasound, we should be able to return to normal activities. Generally, as the test is completed, images generated are interpreted by radiologists (doctors specialized in interpreting imaging studies) and a report is generated to be shared with our doctor. In, Deep Medical Centre, not only do qualified radiologists (Both Male and Female Doctors) prepare the reports but also guide the ultrasound process to capture the best images.
