Well we have already discussed in our previous article – why do we need HSG Test, what is the HSG test, would we feel any discomfort after the test and how do we prepare for an HSG Test (Article Link: HSG Explained ). In this article, we are going to discuss how the HSG procedure is, is HSG risky, and the results of the HSG Test.
How HSG is done? – HSG Procedure
Generally, there is a special chamber where the HSG procedure would be performed by the radiologist our gynecologist. We’ll be directed to lie down on a table under a fluoroscope (An X-ray Imager) and to keep our vagina open, a speculum would be inserted.
Then a cannula (thin tube) is inserted into our cervix after cleaning it, and the speculum is removed. Iodine contrasts with our fallopian tubes and uterus on the x-rays, that’s why our uterus is then filled with a liquid, containing iodine.
The HSG Technician or our radiologist would then capture images with the fluoroscope X-ray. The iodine liquid would show the outline of our fallopian tubes and uterus and the fluid moving through them.
We may also be asked to move around to enable the HSG Technician or the radiologist to get side views and we may also feel some cramping. The cannula would be removed when the images are completed.
is the HSG procedure painful? – HSG Procedure
Both during and after the HSG Procedure, we might feel mild pain or discomfort.
Is HSG risky? – HSG Procedure
All procedures have few risks and HSG is relatively safe. Dye in the fluid may have an allergic reaction. There is also a possibility of Pelvic infection or injury. We must immediately call our doctors if we are facing any of the following symptoms:
• Vomiting
• Heavy Vaginal Bleeding
• Fainting
• Fever
• Unpleasant smelling vaginal discharge
HSG Test Results – HSG Procedure
A report is prepared for our doctors by the radiologist who studies our X-ray images. Our doctor would then talk about and explain the results with us, letting us know if there are any other tests to be done.
A laparoscopy, which lets our doctor loom directly at the fallopian tubes, may be needed if our report shows that our fallopian tubes are blocked. We may also be directed In Vitro Fertilization or IVF. In any case, we would be directed about our options and helped in making the best decision by our doctor.
