Overview: EEG Test Explained
An EEG or an electroencephalogram is a diagnostic test that uses small metal discs, known as electrodes to detect electrical activity in our brain by attaching them to our scalp. Even when we are asleep, our brain cells are all active all the time, communicating via electrical impulses. EEG recording shows this activity as wavy lines.
An EEG plays a role in diagnosing brain disorders and is one of the main diagnostic tests for epilepsy.
Uses of an EEG test: EEG Test Explained
Especially epilepsy or other seizure disorders and other brain disorders may be diagnosed by making use of an EEG to determine changes in brain activity. Given below are major disorders which may be diagnosed by making use of an EEG test :
• Brain damage from a head injury
• Brain tumor
• Encephalopathy ( Brain dysfunction that can have a variety of causes )
• Stroke
• Disorders of sleep
• Encephalitis (Inflammation of the brain)
For someone in a persistent coma, an EEG may also be used to confirm brain death. Also for someone in a medically induced coma, a continuous EEG is used to help in determining the right level of anesthesia.
What are the risks involved in an EEG test? : EEG Test Explained
EEG is a risk-free test with no pain involved. With appropriate medical care provided, sometimes seizures may be intentionally triggered during the test in people with epilepsy.
How can we prepare for an EEG test? : EEG Test Explained
In terms of food and medications, caffeine consumption should be avoided for test results can be affected by its consumption. Usual medications may be taken unless our doctor has instructed us not to take them.
It gets harder for sticky patches that hold the electrodes to adhere to our scalp due to hair products. So as part of other precautions, we may wash our hair the night before or the day of our EEG testing, avoiding the use of conditioners, sprays, styling gels, or hair creams.
We may be asked to sleep lesser or avoid sleep the night before our EEG test by our doctor, in case we are supposed to sleep during our EEG Test.
