Do we feel pain during an EEG test? – EEG Test Process

Electrodes attached to our scalp during the EEG test process to record the brain waves don’t transmit any sensations. During our EEG test process, we’ll feel little or no discomfort.

To indicate where the electrodes would be attached, an EEG technician would measure our heads and mark our scalp with a special pencil. To improve the quality of the recording, a gritty cream may be scrubbed on those spots.

Using a special adhesive, the electrodes are then attached to our scalp by a technician. Instead, an elastic cap fitted with electrodes may be used sometimes. An instrument that is connected to those electrodes, amplifies the brain waves and on computer equipment, the waves get recorded.

Few EEG tests require us to sleep during the test, which makes the test longer, otherwise, an EEG usually takes around 60 minutes, once the electrodes are attached to the scalp.

We are to close our eyes and relax in a comfortable position. We may also be asked to open and close our eyes from time to time, read something, perform some calculations, look at some pictures, loom at a flashing light or perform deep breathing for a few minutes.

A video camera routinely records our body motions during the EEG tests while our brain waves are recorded by the EEG. Our doctor can diagnose and treat our condition with the help of both the two recordings put together.

Brain activities can be recorded over several days with the help of an Ambulatory EEG, increasing the probability of catching seizure activities. Ambulatory EEGs or aEEGs are in limited use and allow for longer monitoring outside an office or hospital setting. To determine the difference between epileptic seizures and nonepileptic seizures, an inpatient video-EEG monitoring does better than an ambulatory EEG.

The electrodes or the cap are removed by the technician. We can return to our normal routine and if we had no sedatives, we shouldn’t feel any side effects after the procedure. If we did use a sedative, the medication would take its time to begin to wear off. Accordingly, we should arrange for someone to drive us back home and we should avoid driving for the rest of the day and take a rest once we are at home.

EEG Test is then analyzed by doctors trained to interpret the recording and the results are to be shared with our doctor who had ordered us to get the EEG test would then discuss the test results with us.

We must make sure that the basic questions like what should be the next steps that we should take according to our results, do we need to repeat the EEG test, what should we do or refrain from doing as part of follow up or could there has been any factor that might have had affected the results of the test.

It is also advisable to bring along a family member or friend with us to the appointment when the doctor is to discuss our EEG report, just so that it is helpful to remember all the information that our doctor provides.
