Get a brief ECG Overview and understand when a doctor would recommend us to get an ECG Test.
What is ECG? – ECG Overview
An electrocardiogram, also known as ECG, is a test in which sensors, attached to our skin, detect the electrical signals which are produced each time by our heart as it beats. A machine records these signals and then these signals are scrutinized by a doctor to find if they’re unusual.
A cardiologist (heart specialist) or any doctor, including our GP [general practitioner, who does not specialize but has a medical practice (general practice) in which he deals with all illnesses] may request an ECG if he/she thinks that we might have a problem with our heart. A specially trained healthcare professional at a hospital, a clinic, or at our GP surgery can carry out the test.
People confuse Electrocardiogram with Echocardiogram. But despite having a similar name, an Echocardiogram, which is a scan of the heart is not the same as an ECG. Learn more about Echocardiogram here :
Use of an Electrocardiogram : ECG Overview
Though now we have a slight overview of the use of ECG, let’s discuss specifically as to when an ECG is used :
To help monitor and diagnose cardio conditions or conditions affecting the heart, an ECG is often used alongside other tests.
ECG may also be used to investigate symptoms of :
• Chest Pain
• Shortness of Breath
• Palpitations (Sudden Noticeable Heartbeats)
• Dizziness
• Other possible heart problems.
An ECG can also help in detecting :
• Coronary Heart Disease: Fatty substances build up and interrupt/block the heart’s blood supply.
• Cardiomyopathy: Walls of the heart become enlarged or thickened.
• Arrhythmias: Beating of the heart is irregular – too slow or too quick
If we are already being diagnosed with a heart condition or taking medication that is known to potentially affect the heart, we can take a series of ECGs to monitor our heart condition.
