Today we are going to discuss ECG preparation and process. Let us first go through the side effects of an Electrocardiogram.
Is ECG risky or are there any side effects of an Electrocardiogram? -ECG Preparation and process
An electrocardiogram, also known as ECG, is a test in which sensors, attached to our skin, detect the electrical signals which are produced each time by our heart as it beats. A machine records these signals and then these signals are scrutinized by a doctor to find if they’re unusual. Click here to read more about : ECG Overview & Uses and Types of ECG.
In case of a stress/exercise ECG, the technician carrying out the test will carefully monitor us and if we experience any symptoms or uneasy, the test would be paused or stopped. The test is always performed under controlled conditions
There may be mild discomforts when the electrodes are being detached from the skin (similar to removing a sticking plaster) and a mild rash may be developed by some people where the electrodes were attached. Other than that, an ECG is a safe and quick test that involves no electricity to be put in our body during the test.
How do we prepare for an ECG Test? – ECG Preparation and process
Well, there are no special preparations for the test. We can normally eat and drink beforehand, and we don’t need to do anything special to prepare for an ECG test.
How is ECG done or what happens during an ECG Test? – ECG Preparation and process
An ECG may be carried out in various ways. A number of electrodes (small and sticky sensors) are attached to our arms, legs, and chest generally to carry out the test. An ECG recording machine is connected to these small, sticky sensors by wires.
We may need to have a shaved and clean chest. To attach the electrodes, we are usually directed to remove our upper clothing and we may be offered a hospital gown to cover ourself, once all the electrodes are attached to their place.
We may return to our ward (if we are hospitalized) or can go back home after the test which usually only lasts for around 30 minutes.
