Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
Echocardiography allows our doctors to see our heart beating and pumping by using sound waves to generate images of our heart to detect any heart problems.
Why is echocardiography done? – Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
We may be suggested by our doctors to get this test in many cases, such as:
• To check if there are problems with the heart’s chambers or valves
• To ascertain whether is it the heart that is causing symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath.
• Fetal Echocardiography may be suggested to detect congenital heart defects before birth
Types of Echocardiogram – Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
Depending on the information that the doctor wants, a different sort of echocardiography may be needed. Given below are the types of Echocardiogram :
Transthoracic echocardiography – Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
During Transthoracic Echocardiography, a sonographer (technician) applies gel on the transducer (device) and presses the transducer firmly against our skin, targeting an ultrasound beam to our heart through our chest to record the sound wave echoing from our heart. A computer is used to convert the echoes into moving images.
An enhancing agent which is generally safe and well-tolerated, which makes our heart’s structures give a clearer picture on the monitor, may be injected through an intravenous (IV) line, if our lungs or ribs may be blocking the view.
Transesophageal echocardiogram – Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
Transesophageal echocardiography may be recommended by our doctors if they require more-detailed images or getting a clearer picture with the standard echocardiography is difficult.
Our throat is numbed during this process, and we are aided with medications to help us get relaxation. A flexible tube, which contains a transducer is guided down our throat and then into the esophagus (Food Pipe – Tube connecting our mouth to our stomach) to record the sound wave echoing from our heart which is converted into detailed moving images of our heart by a computer to be viewed on a screen.
Doppler echocardiogram – Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
When the sound waves bounce off blood cells moving through our heart and blood vessels, they change pitch and these changes come to be known as doppler signals which can aid our doctors to measure the speed and the direction in which the blood is flowing in our heart. Generally, Doppler Techniques are used in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and can also be used blood flow problems and pressure of the blood in the arteries of our heart which may not be detected by the traditional ultrasound. To help our doctor pinpoint any problems, the blood flow which is shown on the computer screen is given color.
Stress echocardiogram – Overview of Echocardiography, Uses & Types
Occurring only during physical activity, some heart problems, problems involving the coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood to our heart muscle), in particular, may be recommended with stress echocardiography by our doctor. Echocardiography, however, can’t provide information about any blockage in the arteries of the heart.
During stress echocardiography, before and immediately after we have walked ok a treadmill or rode a stationary bike, ultrasound images of our heart are taken. An injection may be given to make our heart pump as hard as if we were exercising in case we’re unable to exercise.
