Human Body Urinary Tract: IVP Test Overview

An intravenous pyelogram or IVP is a type of diagnostic test which is used to look at the kidneys and ureters with the help of X-ray images. The urine is carried by the narrow tubes from the kidneys to the bladder, known as the ureters.

A contrast dye, during the test, is injected into one of the veins by a radiologist who watches the contrast dye as it moves from the kidney into the ureter and then to the bladder, using the X-ray images. Blockage in the blood flow through a kidney or improper workings of the kidney, ureter, or bladder is depicted by slow-moving dye or dye that does not move at all.

We may be directed to get an IVP test by our doctor if he/she thinks we may have a urinary tract problem or kidney disease.

Because an IVP test is a sort of X-ray, it uses a small amount of radiation to generate images of our bones and internal organs.

The CT Scan of the kidneys makes images that show layers or “slices” of the kidney and also uses contrast dye. An IVP test may be conducted at the same time as this CT Scan of the kidneys, also known as Urography.

The size, shape, and structure of our kidneys, ureters, and bladder can be viewed by our doctors through an IVP Test. Our doctor might direct us to get an IVP test if he/she suspects us of having :

• Kidney disease
• Enlarged Prostate
• Tumors
• Flank pain or pain spasms in the kidney area
• Trauma or injury to the urinary tract
• Ureter or Bladder stones

Kidney tumors or kidney problems caused by trauma are more accurately diagnosed by the CT Scan of the kidney (Urography).

An IVP test may also be recommended for any other reasons if the doctor seems it to be necessary.
