In the previous article, we have already had an overview of the Fetal Echocardiography test. Where we have already discussed What is Fetal Echocardiography test, why a Fetal Echocardiography test is recommended, is it risky, and how do we prepare for a fetal echocardiography test? If you haven’t read that, we would recommend you to first read the overview of a fetal echocardiography test.
What happens during a Fetal Echocardiography Test?
Firstly, a specially trained pediatric cardiologist, obstetrician, maternal-fetal medicine, or radiologist does a fetal echo. Generally, the steps include:
•You are supposed to lie on an examination table. There’s no need to change your clothes.
•The Healthcare provider will apply the gel to your belly.
•After this, an electronic device called a transducer is used that sends out sound waves.
•Healthcare professionals will move the transducer around to get the best image of the fatal heart. One may feel pressure as the transducer moves around your belly.
•The gel is wiped off after the exam.
Periodically, an endo-vaginal echocardiogram is done early in pregnancy to keep track of the developing fetus’s heartbeat. Instead of putting it on the belly, The healthcare provider puts a small echocardiogram probe into the vagina.
Further tests after Fetal Echocardiography Test
Our healthcare provider observes the test results. They may ask us to get more tests or procedures. They may include:
•Treatment- This involves the usage of medicine or procedures to treat fetal heart problems.
•Ultrasounds or echocardiography – After a favorable diagnosis, Tests are conducted by healthcare professionals to verify such diagnosis. It involves reviewing fetal growth, fetal heart changes, and other issues.
•Nonstress test-It checks fetal heart rate and movement.
•Amniocentesis- This test helps to find genetic disorders and certain delivery defects. Simply by putting a needle through the abdominal and uterine wall and into the amniotic sac, we collect the sample.
•Biophysical profile(BPP)- It’s like an ultrasound exam to monitor overall fetal health. It helps to check heart rate, breathing, movement, muscle tone, and the amount of amniotic fluid.
•Genetic counseling- With the help of a counselor, you get to know the risks of having a baby with genetic defects.
•Fetal wellness assessments- Healthcare provider might ask you to count fetal movements.
